SA20: Super Kings stun leaders Super Giants in high-scoring encounter

JOHANNESBURG: Faf du Plessis and Leus du Plooy scored half-centuries in the run chase to steer Joburg Super Kings to a seven-wicket victory over leaders Durban’s Super Giants in the 29th match of the SA20 here on Saturday.

Put into bat first, the Super Giants posted a massive total of 203/6 on the board, courtesy of JJ Smuts and Wiaan Mulder’s fighting half-centuries.

The table-toppers had a dismal start to their innings as they were three down for just 32 in 4.2 overs.

Following the slump, Smuts and Mulder partnered strongly and turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting.

The pair added 115 runs for the fourth wicket, conceding just 70 deliveries and both scoring half-centuries.

But both set batters perished in the span of three deliveries, resulting in the Super Giants slipping to 147/5 in 16.1 overs.

Smuts smashed four boundaries and as many sixes on his way to a 34-ball 55 while Mulder top-scored with 59 off 40 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and two sixes.

Heinrich Klaasen then made sure smooth flow of runs for the Super Giants with his quickfire camoe.

The right-handed batter scored an unbeaten 40 off 16 deliveries with the help of three boundaries and as many sixes.

Lizaad Williams led the bowling attack for the Super Kings with 3/47, followed by Doug Bracewell, who bagged two wickets.

Chasing a mammoth 204, the Super Kings accumulated 209/3 on the penultimate delivery of the innings when Donovan Ferreira pinned Dwaine Pretorius for a six.

Earlier, openers Faf du Plessis and Leus du Plooy gave the Super Kings a commanding with a ferocious stand which yielded 102 runs in just 8.2 overs.

Skipper du Plessis dominated the stand with seven boundaries and three sixes amid his 29-ball 57.

Wayne Madsen then joined du Plooy in the middle and the pair retained the Super Kings’ momentum with an anchoring partnership.

The duo added 57 runs for the second wicket before du Plooy was castled by Noor Ahmad in the 17th over when his side needed a further 45 runs in 20 balls.

He remained the joint top-scorer for the Super Kings with 57 off 47 deliveries.

Madsen was then involved in yet another important partnership when he knitted 36 runs for the third wicket with Moeen Ali, who played an important 26-run cameo.

Moeen was dismissed on the second delivery of the final over when his side needed a further nine runs off four deliveries.

But, Donovan Ferreira’s astounding cameo of 14 which came off just three deliveries, steered the side over the line.
